David Robinson

David was born in Lancashire, but now lives in Dudley. The majority of his theatre training was at Amersham College, following which he worked for four years with the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. David joined Saltmine in 1989, performing in all of the major productions, becoming the Creative Arts Director in 1998. He has written sketches for Saltmine, Tear Fund, Toybox and Chrysalis, and is a co-writer of the book 'Could You Put Something on Please?'
David frequently joins the Saltmine Theatre Company on their national tours.

God’s Smuggler

He smuggled thousands of bibles across dangerous borders and into the hands of desperate people.  Now Brother Andrew’s story is making a (slightly) less hazardous journey into British churches and theatres.  The classic autobiographical tale God’s Smuggler has been dramatised for the stage by Saltmine’s Creative Arts Director, David Robinson.

Christian persecution awareness charity Open Doors www.opendoorsuk.org approached David to adapt the story as part of their 50th anniversary celebrations.  First published in 1968 the book has now sold over ten million copies.

It was in 1955 that Andrew, a Dutchman, watched young Poles declaring the glories of the Communist revolution.  Looking down at his open bible, his gaze fell on Revelation 3:2 – ‘Awake, and strengthen what remains and is at the point of death.’  It was Andrew’s call to wake up from his complacency – and begin to help persecuted Christians who lived in some of the world’s most difficult areas.

“I had the privilege of meeting Brother Andrew over Easter 2005” says David, “it’s a truly inspirational story, and makes a very powerful theatrical experience.  Thirty-five years on, the remarkable story of Brother Andrew will not have lost any of its impact.”
